What comes to your mind when thinking about Africa?
What thoughts and emotions do you have about it? Growing up in Europe, the main images I used to associate Africa with, were poverty, drought, famine, war, sickness, missionaries and Band Aid. Other ideas related were slave trade, colonialism, pyramids, Apartheid, etc. There have been other consequences because of colonialism, that have a deep impact not only in Africa but in the African diaspora and the emigrants. Identity related to poverty. A mind influenced by this negative past could make people forget their pre-colonialism identity, with a past which reveals, for example, "bronzes displaying a level of technical accomplishment that was notably more advanced than European bronze casting of the same period". Poverty in Africa is due to different factors. Regardless the richness of the natural resources, the standard and quality of living for the majority is low. However, there is hope in Africa Rising and there are indicators that rise hope in the economy of Africa. There are many emigrants who have settled in countries outside Africa that go back to Africa on holidays. Some of them would stay longer in Africa if there was an improvement in infrastructures (electricity, highways, railways, etc.), healthcare services, social services, stability and general governance improvements (employment, equal opportunities, etc.). There could be a lot of opportunities for emigrants to come back to Africa and open businesses that also would contribute to the increment of tourism. When travelling around Europe, you can find many similarities, such as global brands and franchises that help you to familiarise with a country you come for first time and make it easier to adapt to live there. Global companies, such as Amazon are emulated in Africa. Amazon was founded in 1994. In 2011 it launched in Spain and already was present in United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Japan and China. At present, Amazon operates in 16 countries at least. In Nigeria, there are eCommerce platforms such as Konga.com and Jumia.com. Mobile phones are transforming Africa. The use of smart phones are allowing connections between Africans who live in Africa and abroad to create whatsapp groups in which they analyse the development of their regions. This allows a dialog/criticism about the governments and what they should improve. Other eCommerce platforms are: Takealot.com, kilimall.co.ke and Bidorbuy.co.za www.afrogood.com pretends to contribute to these improvements by showing the positive things that are not only in the history of Africa, but also in current times. Besides the information presented in the website, here you can see some of the Tourist Attractions in Africa. |
